Dresden (dpa / sn) - After the ammunition scandal at the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) Saxony, a change in staff should restore confidence.

The former LKA boss Petric Kleine (58) takes on a management function in the state police headquarters, the former LKA department head Sven Mewes (60) is moving to the police department in Görlitz as head of the management staff.

The personnel restart is necessary to "restore confidence in the central authority for fighting crime in all of Saxony and its leadership," said the interior ministry spokeswoman, Silvaine Reiche, in Dresden on Wednesday.

"In addition, external and independent experts will examine, among other things, whether and what circumstances in the organization, management and supervision of the special forces have favored these misconduct."

The ministry had already announced last week that the previous head of the Chemnitz Police Department, Sonja Penzel (48), would be the new president of the State Criminal Police Office.

She takes up this office on May 1st.

Further personal details have now been determined: Carsten Kaempf (52) will take over Penzel's position in Chemnitz on July 1st.

He was previously the rector of the Saxon Police College.

This function will be advertised again, it said.

The background to the change in personnel is the investigation of 17 officers from the Mobile Task Force in Dresden for theft or aid to theft, violation of the Weapons Act and corruption.

The four main suspects - the command leader and three shooting trainers - are suspected of stealing at least 7,000 rounds of ammunition from the stocks of the Saxon police in November 2018.

The ammunition is said to have served as payment for shooting training at a private shooting range in Güstrow.

There was no permission for the training.

Possible contacts between the officials and right-wing extremists are also being investigated.
