Munich (dpa / lby) - After strangers pushed a bronze bust of King Ludwig II from its pedestal at Munich's Cornelius Bridge into the Isar, the association "King Ludwig II Monument" wants to promote the search for the perpetrators with a reward.

The chairman Dietmar Holzapfel praised 2000 euros for the crucial hint, as he announced on Wednesday.

The "Bild" newspaper reported on it.

"Whatever the motivation of the perpetrators may have been, such an act is unacceptable, after all, it is public property and a work of art," said Holzapfel.

A walker had discovered the bust on Saturday in the Isar.

The fire brigade recovered them, according to the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, which is investigating several damage to monuments.

It was initially unclear whether those arrested in this context could also be responsible for the case on the Isar.

According to Holzapfel, the Ludwig bust is a replica.

Until 1942, a three-meter-tall bronze statue of the king stood in a pink marble niche by the bridge.

The figure - except for the head - would have been melted down by the Nazis as a "Reichsmetall donation", the original head was placed in a side wing of the opera.

The association "King Ludwig II Monument", founded in 2020, is committed to the construction of a more worthy monument from parts of the original monument on the bridge from 2022 onwards.

"A romanticizing ruin should be created," said Holzapfel.

"The whole bastion is to be spruced up with green areas and rose beds - a kind of rose island is to be created similar to the rose island in Lake Starnberg, a place of love, romance, beauty."
