Butner (AP) - The US stockbroker Bernard Madoff, sentenced to 150 years in prison for one of the largest investment fraud cases in financial history, is dead. Corresponding US media reports confirmed US judicial authorities on Wednesday when asked.

Madoff died at the age of 82 in a North Carolina prison hospital, serving his sentence.

Madoff is considered the mastermind of a financial fraud of historical dimensions.

He pleaded guilty to 11 counts in 2009, including fraud and money laundering.

He had brought investors tens of billions of dollars by faking supposed dream profits from the money of new investors for decades.

When the hoax was exposed in the financial crisis, many lost all their savings.

Madoff had already complained in an interview with the Washington Post in February 2020 of being terminally ill and applied for early release in the corona pandemic, which was not granted.

His lawyer had stated at the time that Madoff had fatal kidney disease and probably had less than 18 months to live.
