New York (AP) - The Netflix hit series "Bridgerton" gets two more seasons.

The streaming service announced this via the short message service Twitter.

The first season of the history series started in late 2020 and has become one of the most successful in Netflix history.

According to the streaming service, around 82 million households worldwide watched within the first month after publication.

In almost all countries the show made it into the top 10 - in 83 countries it even made it into first place.

The second season is currently being worked on.

"Bridgerton" is based on a series of novels of the same name, which has since become a bestseller, and revolves around the life and dance balls of London's high society in the early 19th century.

The series is produced by Shonda Rhimes, who is known among other things as the creator of the hospital series "Grey's Anatomy".

One of the most popular stars of the first season is actor Regé-Jean Page (31), who has already announced that he will no longer be part of the following seasons - which has provoked numerous protests from fans.

"I did not expect such an explosion, because in the novel series there is a different romance in every book," said producer Rhimes of "Vanity Fair".

"We gave them their happy ending, and now the next couple is coming."

Page only had a contract for one season from the start, Rhimes said.

But she announced that he might be able to come back for brief appearances.
