Bochum (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalian schools in places with social problems had to close more often on average than others due to corona in the second half of 2020, according to a current study.

Scientists from the universities in Bochum and Osnabrück see this as evidence of the worsening of educational inequality in the pandemic feared by many experts.

Partial closings of schools were disproportionately frequent in places where child poverty is widespread.

“We see that social factors influence the effect of Corona on education.

The weakest show greater vulnerability, ”said the Osnabrück education researcher Christian Reintjes, according to a statement from the Ruhr University in Bochum on Tuesday.

Schools that have a difficult starting point should therefore be given more resources to implement remedial lessons or for smaller classes, the researchers demanded.

"Otherwise, educational inequality will become even greater."

In the statistical analysis published in an anthology, the researchers found, in addition to factors such as school size or general infection rate, a clear connection to social problems in the school environment.

For example, in the period after the 2020 summer vacation until shortly before Christmas, when schools across the country were supposed to return to regular operations after the previous compulsory Corona break, such pupils had to return to distance lessons particularly often, their social, family, homely or technical requirements precisely for this are particularly unfavorable, so the authors' conclusion.
