Berlin (dpa / bb) - If street festivals can take place again this year, commercial enterprises and organizers in Berlin do not have to pay any special usage fees.

The Berlin Senate decided on Tuesday on a presentation by Environment Senator Regine Günther (Greens).

With the waiver of the special usage fees, the event industry is to be supported and the preservation of jobs promoted.

With the decision, Berlin was declaring "a special public interest in such events," said the Senate.

The district authorities are thus allowed to waive the collection of the fees normally due for the use of traffic areas at street festivals until the end of the year.

This applies to events such as the “Classic Open Air” concert, the New Year's Eve celebration at the Brandenburg Gate, folk festivals, neighborhood festivals or Christmas markets, it said.
