Weiden (dpa / lby) - The Weiden district court has sentenced two men to several years' imprisonment for people smuggling.

The two 40 and 31-year-old men were part of a smuggling gang, said a spokesman for the court on Wednesday when asked.

According to the judgment, at the beginning of 2018 they had brought around 130 people without entry papers across the border from the Czech Republic to Germany, including minors.

On Tuesday, the 40-year-old was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment in five cases for the smuggling of foreigners in a gang and the 31-year-old, nine years and six months.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.

According to the regional court, the refugees came mainly from Iraq, but also from Iran and Syria.

The 40-year-old had a leading position in the gang's hierarchy and organized the smuggling sections from Turkey to Germany from London.

He hired a haulage company and driver to bring people across the border.

The 31-year-old, on the other hand, organized the smuggling from Serbia to Romania, according to the judgment.
