Chekhov (dpa) - The Rhein-Neckar Löwen have created a decent starting position in the European League for the intended participation in the final tournament.

The handball Bundesliga team lost their quarter-final first leg at the Russian club Medvedi Chekhov with 32:33 (19:15) on Tuesday, but progress in the second leg next Tuesday in Heidelberg is possible.

Andy Schmid was the top scorer for the North Baden team with seven goals.

In front of 1000 spectators, the lions led to the break thanks to a fast switching game at 19:15.

After the change of sides, the Russian first division side forced the Lions to attack for position, which coach Martin Schwalb's team couldn't cope with at all.

In the final phase the Lions improved their chances of qualifying for the Final Four after a 29:33 deficit with a 3-0 run.
