Hanover (dpa / lni) - The director of the Bergen-Belsen memorial, Elke Gryglewski, has called on politicians to take a clearer stand against right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism.

It is very worrying that participants in protests against state corona measures do not mind that right-wing extremist groups also accompany these demonstrations.

"This is something that you have to pay close attention to to see where it is developing," said the political scientist, who has also been the new director of the Lower Saxony Memorials Foundation since January.

The 55-year-old is concerned about crude comparisons of the Corona restrictions with the persecution of Jews under National Socialism.

"You should get in touch with the Jewish community, what it means to them that stars of David are pinned to the demonstrations," said Gryglewski.

Only recently, a poster with a quote from Sophie Scholl was carried during a demonstration in Dachau.

“We're talking about a place with a concentration camp memorial that permanently deals with National Socialism.

This shows that the inhibition threshold has dropped very far. "

Sophie Scholl was executed for her resistance to National Socialism.

Anti-Jewish and right-wing extremist ideas have always been present, said Gryglewski.

Since the AfD has been in the Bundestag, it has increasingly been expressed by people who claim to come from the middle of society, she said.

This Thursday (April 15) marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in the Lüneburg Heath.

As in 2020, there will only be one small memorial event due to the corona, which will be broadcast on the Internet.
