Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Around 26,820 tons of disinfectants were produced in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 2020 corona year.

That is about three times as much as in the previous year, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Düsseldorf.

Compared to 2010 (4,100 tons) the amount has increased more than sixfold.

According to a spokeswoman, the reason for the sharp increase is the corona pandemic.

The production of disinfectants in the 21 North Rhine-Westphalian companies had already been expanded in the first half of 2020.

From January to June 2020, 15,107 tons were produced - almost four times as much as in the same period of the previous year (2019: 4,156 tons).

The sales value in 2020 was 63.6 million euros and thus more than doubled compared to the previous year (2019: 25.9 million euros).

The share of North Rhine-Westphalia in the nationwide production volume has increased from 6.4 percent to 22.9 percent since 2010.

The statisticians point out that only the weight of the active ingredient is recorded for disinfectants.

The amount of ready-to-use disinfectants can be significantly higher by adding water or soap, for example.

According to the authorities, the information relates to companies with at least 20 employees.
