Beware of the "safety reminder" trap

Has mobile phone cleaning software "pitted" you?

(Online China)

On the surface it is a "safety reminder" that can clean up mobile phone trash, but in fact it defrauds clicks, reads private information, and some even sets precise traps for fraud... Recently, 4 mobile phone cleaning apps were exposed due to illegal collection of elderly personal information .

In response to this, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology carried out technical inspections as soon as possible, and severely investigated and dealt with mobile APP violations.

Why the more "cleaning up" the more lagging?

Grandma Li, who is in her 70s, always receives "safety prompts" such as "insufficient memory", "virus files", and "junk cleanup" when she uses her smartphone to read news and novels. After she downloaded the cleaning software according to the prompts, she found that There are more and more "safety tips", and more and more mobile phones are stuck.

In addition, Grandma Li also found that some "tempting" advertisements often appeared on her mobile phones, such as red envelopes to receive money, gold coins to make money, and walking to make money.

This is not the confusion of Grandma Li alone. Many elderly people have encountered the same problem when using smartphones.

Why is it that the more mobile phone trash is cleaned up, the slower it is to use it?

Experts from the Cyber Security Center of the China Electronics Standardization Institute tested this phenomenon.

In a novel reading software, an advertisement for cleaning software appeared during the normal reading process. After clicking, the phone downloaded and installed an APP called "Memory Optimizer". During the automatic cleaning process, the "Clean phone cache" message continued to pop up. Reminder, after clicking again, the mobile phone downloaded and installed the "Super Cleaner Master", and kept reminding, downloading, and cleaning up. The same path was repeated, and the mobile phone installed "Smart Cleaner Master" and "Mobile Manager Pro".

In just a few minutes, 4 clean-up software "settled down" on the mobile phone.

After testing the last installed "Mobile Manager Pro", experts said: "This APP essentially opens the cleanup function very simple, and some even have no cleanup effect."

  Information security cannot be ignored

Expert tests have found that all sorts of cleaning "masters" seem to be cleaning up mobile phone trash, but in fact they steal a lot of user information in the background.

Experts found in the test of "Mobile Manager Pro" that in just 8.75 seconds, the APP reads 890 user application lists, more than 1,300 mobile user identification numbers (IMSI), and more than 900 mobile device identification codes. (IMEI).

Experts pointed out that this type of mobile phone cleaning software reads mobile phone information with high frequency and continuously uploads it, which makes the CPU run under high load, causing the mobile phone to freeze, so as to achieve the purpose of allowing users to continuously click to download the APP, forming a vicious circle.

It is worth noting that once such apps are stationed in elderly mobile phones for a long time, they will continue to send user data information in the background, make accurate user portraits of the elderly, and label them "easy to be misled and induced" as a group label.

As a result, all kinds of vulgar, low-quality and even deceptive advertisements and content will be continuously pushed to the mobile phones of the elderly.

What's more serious is that the platform may package and sell the collected user information to criminals to engage in telecommunications fraud and criminal activities.

In this regard, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has dealt with it as soon as possible.

Through technical testing, it was verified that the four apps of "Memory Optimization Master", "Smart Cleaning Master", "Super Clean Master" and "Mobile Manager Pro" deceive and mislead users to download and process personal information in violation of regulations. The major app stores have been required to do so. Remove the shelves, and organize the communications administrations of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangdong provinces and cities to investigate and deal with the entities involved.

Industry insiders pointed out that current smart phones usually have their own mobile phone housekeeper or similar cleaning software, which can effectively clean up "junk" and optimize memory. Users do not need to download third-party apps of this kind.

For users, how to correctly identify regular mobile apps to ensure their own information security?

Some experts suggest: First, go to the regular application market or official website that comes with the phone to download the software, but don’t just click on the pop-up window; second, set up the security of the phone and establish a "firewall"; third, download the application in time Uninstall the software installation package to free up memory space and reduce lag.

  Weaving secret supervision "protection net"

In recent years, widespread problems such as APP's collection and use of personal information beyond the scope and deception and misleading users to download have attracted great attention from relevant departments. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has carried out special rectification actions for APP infringing users' rights and interests for two consecutive years.

As of March 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has completed a total of 730,000 APP technical inspections, issued 12 consecutive batches of external notifications, ordered the rectification of 3,046 illegal apps, and removed 179 apps that refused to rectify. The governance work has achieved positive results.

At present, relevant laws and regulations to protect the security of citizens' personal information are constantly being improved.

Yang Xiaowei, deputy director of the State Internet Information Office, disclosed that the "Data Security Law" and "Personal Information Protection Law" are currently being stepped up to provide legal protection for data security and personal privacy protection.

Recently, the State Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, and the State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued the "Regulations on the Scope of Necessary Personal Information for Common Types of Mobile Internet Applications", which clarified the scope of necessary personal information for 39 common types of apps and required them to Operators shall not refuse users to use basic functional services of APP because they do not agree to provide non-essential personal information. Among them, 13 types of APPs can use basic functional services without personal information.

The relevant person in charge of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that the next step will be to further build an industry-wide service supervision system covering basic telecommunications companies, various telecommunications business operators, and Internet service providers from four aspects: First, strengthen special rectification, and increase exposure and disposal. ; The second is to improve the system and standards, and the "Interim Provisions on the Management of Personal Information Protection for Mobile Internet Applications" will be issued as soon as possible in conjunction with relevant departments; the third is to strengthen the construction of technical means to greatly increase the coverage and depth of automated testing of the national APP technology testing platform; the fourth is to strengthen Industry self-discipline, urge companies to further strengthen the awareness of personal information protection red lines, and create a safer, healthier and cleaner APP application environment for the majority of users.
