Bremen (dpa) - The federal states want to talk to the federal government at the Transport Ministers' Conference (VMK) this week about a rapid expansion of rail transport and local public transport.

Important aspects are, among other things, the reactivation of railway lines, a barrier-free expansion of stations and the electrification of lines, it was said in advance.

"The strengthening of local public transport and rail transport is a key prerequisite for achieving the set climate targets," emphasized the VMK chairman, Bremen's Senator Maike Schaefer (Greens), on Monday.

The topic of the VMK should also be the ongoing dispute over the new road traffic regulations (StVO).

This is about a change to the StVO and the catalog of fines that was actually decided in February 2020, which provides for significantly more severe penalties, among other things, for driving too fast.

Due to a formal error, however, the implementation of the new catalog of fines was suspended.

The federal and state governments announced in February that "under certain conditions" they could imagine setting up a search committee to find a solution.

On Thursday, the heads of department and state secretaries will first advise via video link, and then on Friday the ministers will meet, including Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU).
