Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Verdi union has rejected demands for Sunday openings in the aftermath of the pandemic in Berlin.

"The last day off in retail has been a thorn in the side of trade lobbyists for a long time, they want shops to be allowed to open around the clock on all days," said the Berlin-Brandenburg district on request.

"The Corona crisis must also serve as an argument for the Sunday opening they are aiming for."

It is clear that even shops that are open on Sundays cannot compensate for the loss of sales in the retail sector, according to the union.

"For large parts of the retail trade, better times will come when Corona can be successfully pushed back."

Verdi reacted to statements made by the general manager of the Berlin-Brandenburg trade association, Nils Busch-Petersen.

This had again pushed for Sunday openings for the time after the pandemic.

"We consider shop regulations and opening times to be an anachronism in the online age anyway," he told the "Berliner Morgenpost" (Sunday).

"We really need more freedom for the reconstruction."
