Cologne (dpa) - A 30-year-old tried to travel in the direction of Frankfurt on the step of an intercity train in Cologne main station.

A railway employee noticed the man clinging to the outside of the train and initiated an emergency braking, a spokeswoman for the federal police reported on Tuesday.

The traveler explained his strange behavior to the federal police when he got out of the car during the 40-minute stop in Cologne to smoke a cigarette.

He missed the onward journey and jumped up without further ado when the doors could no longer be opened.

Criminal charges were filed against the man for dangerous interference with rail traffic.
