Hanover (dpa / lni) - Because of the corona pandemic, Lower Saxony's streets were much emptier than usual last year - for this reason, the number of traffic accidents has also decreased significantly.

Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants to present the exact numbers at an online press conference today, Tuesday (11.30 a.m.).

According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office, 2719 people died in road traffic across Germany in 2020, almost 11 percent less than in the previous year.

According to an evaluation by the State Office for Statistics in Hanover, 369 people were killed in traffic in Lower Saxony, about 15 percent less than in 2019. It is still particularly dangerous for motorcyclists and cyclists - the number of deaths among them has not fallen to the same extent as that of drivers .
