The Swedish Transport Administration has sent a so-called direction document to the government for the forthcoming infrastructure plan.

In the focus material, it is clear that the Swedish Transport Administration wants to see increased investments in maintenance.

This is how the Swedish Transport Agency writes:

“The need for funds to maintain current functionality in terms of speed, bearing capacity and capacity, and to recover neglected road and rail maintenance, exceeds the existing framework.

On the road side, degradation is accelerating, and both the low- and high-traffic road networks are gradually deteriorating.

All in all, this leads to a gradual reduction in the standard of both road and rail networks.

Cherish what is available

The Swedish Transport Administration writes that most of both the road and the railway networks are old and not dimensioned for the amount of traffic that is today.

When the infrastructure deteriorates, it also becomes more expensive to repair.

The Swedish Transport Administration would also rather take care of the existing infrastructure than start new projects.

How to write:

"Based on the given financial framework, the Swedish Transport Administration assesses that the benefit of maintaining the current functionality in the infrastructure is greater than making new investments."
