Hanover (dpa / lni) - In the Corona year 2020, fewer people died in traffic accidents in Lower Saxony than ever since records began in 1953.

It only looked different on country roads: The number of people killed in so-called tree accidents rose by one to 121, as Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday for the 2020 traffic accident statistics.

Around a third of all accidental deaths in the country died in a tree accident, as the SPD politician said.

A total of 370 people died in traffic accidents in Lower Saxony in 2020, 62 fewer than in 2019.

The younger drivers are noticeable in the fatal accidents with street trees on the country roads, said Pistorius.

21 of the 121 traffic fatalities were between 18 and 24 years old, between 25 and 34 years there were even 31 fatalities: "That shows: Too high a speed and even very short inattention or distraction is life-threatening."

Pistorius announced a nationwide accident prevention campaign.
