Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The SPD opposition has asked the state government in North Rhine-Westphalia to also take care of possible deliveries of the Russian corona vaccine Sputnik V.

"I have absolutely no understanding that the Prime Minister is so reluctant to organize additional vaccines," criticized SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty on Tuesday in Düsseldorf.

Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, on the other hand, have already signed preliminary contracts.

By the time the European Medicines Agency approves Sputnik V, the relevant preliminary contracts would have to be "signed and sealed" long ago.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are “no such plans in North Rhine-Westphalia” so far.

In addition, there is currently still no preparation in North Rhine-Westphalia as to how children could be included in the vaccination campaigns as soon as possible, said Kutschaty.

The pharmaceutical company Biontech already has a vaccine for children from the age of twelve in the USA.

"Here too, North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany must act," said the opposition leader.

The fact that there are not even enough tests for daycare centers and schools in North Rhine-Westphalia is “a real scandal,” says Kutschaty.

In a current submission to the state parliament, the interior minister responsible for procurement in North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul (CDU), himself admitted that the entire requirement “will probably only be met from the 18th calendar week”, quoted Kutschaty from the submission.

Reul is therefore responsible for the procurement of self-rapid tests for the state administration and the schools.
