Washington (AP) - In a gun attack on a school in Knoxville, Tennessee, several people were hit by bullets.

The police said on Twitter that there were reports of several victims, including a police officer.

At first it was unclear whether they were injured or dead.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee spoke of "a very difficult and tragic situation".

But not very many details are known yet.

The local broadcaster WATE reported that the school building had been secured.

Students who were not affected have been released to their families.

In the United States, there are repeated fatal firearms attacks in schools.

In February 2018, for example, a 19-year-old boy opened fire at his former school in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people.
