Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's tram network is to be expanded further.

The Senate decided on Tuesday to press ahead with the planning of two routes.

One is the extension of the M10 tram line from Warschauer Straße in Friedrichshain through Görlitzer Park to Hermannplatz in Neukölln.

On the other hand, the tram tracks are to be extended from Pasedagplatz in Weißensee via the Heinersdorf S-Bahn station to the Pankow S-Bahn and U-Bahn station.

According to the traffic administration, so-called preferred variants have been defined for the routing of both projects, which are now being examined and prepared in more detail.

However, it will still take some time until completion and commissioning.

Trams will be on both connections “earliest” in 2028, as it was said.

Environment and Transport Senator Regine Günther (Greens) pointed out that both new lines were part of an “unprecedented tram offensive” to promote the mobility transition: 15 new lines had already been decided within 15 years.

According to the traffic administration, the tram network in Berlin currently covers 194 kilometers, making it one of the largest in the world.

Another 70 kilometers would be added within 15 years.
