Rosenheim (dpa / lby) - The possible new railway line in the Bavarian Inn Valley towards Brenner should run east of Rosenheim and Inn.

On Tuesday, Deutsche Bahn presented this proposal for the route for the so-called Brenner northern inlet.

The route is to run underground in the northeast of Rosenheim and over a long stretch along the Inn.

In the south, the Inn is also to be crossed under, as the railway announced together with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU).

The railway thus selected the most elaborate one from the four remaining variants for a possible track layout.

60 percent of the 54 km long route drawn in purple in the plans are to be tunnelled.

The other variants - yellow, turquoise and olive - would have run west of the Inn.

Another blue variant had previously been classified as not spatially compatible.

Scheuer spoke of a very important day for a “European project of the century”.

It's about getting as many goods as possible off the road and onto the rails.

The aim is also to protect residents, home, nature and the environment.

“The sharp pencil” is not the only priority here.

Bavaria's rail boss Klaus-Dieter Josel spoke of a major milestone for the project.

The route chosen is the most compatible variant with the greatest acceptance.

In the further preliminary planning, engineers are now working out details.

Then politics decides.

Citizens' initiatives reject the project in principle.

They see no need and favor the expansion and modernization of the existing tracks.
