The regular season game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Brooklyn Nets scheduled for Monday night in Minneapolis has been postponed, the day after the death of a young black man during his arraignment Sunday near the city, announced the NBA.

"In light of the tragic events that took place yesterday in the Minneapolis area, Monday night's meeting between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Brooklyn Nets has been postponed. This decision was made by the NBA in consultation with the Wolves and local authorities, "the body said in a statement.

"Yesterday's tragic event, fatal to the life of Daunte Wright, once again leaves our community in mourning (...) we believe that the postponement of tonight's game against the Brooklyn Nets is the best decision" , for their part indicated the Wolves.

A few minutes before them, the neighboring franchise of the Minnesota Twins was the first to announce the postponement of its North American Championship Baseball (MLB) game against the Boston Red Sox.

Wolves, Twins and NBA each concluded their press release by offering their "condolences to the family of Daunte Wright", this young man of 20, killed Sunday afternoon during his arrest, while he was driving with his little one. friend in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of the metropolis.

On Monday, police ruled his death "accidental".

The officer "pulled out her firearm in place of her Taser," an electric pulse pistol believed to be non-lethal, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon told a press conference.

The day before, some 200 demonstrators protested outside the Brooklyn Center police station, and law enforcement used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd.

Faced with the burning situation, the mayor of Minneapolis declared a curfew for Monday evening.

US President Joe Biden, lamenting Wright's "tragic" death, called on protesters to remain "peaceful".

The new death comes as the trial of Derek Chauvin, the white police officer accused of the murder of George Floyd last year, is taking place in Minneapolis.
