Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has announced that her cabinet will decide on Tuesday on the option to secure the Russian corona vaccine Spuntik V.

"This option should be due as soon as the vaccine receives approval for Germany and Europe," she said, according to a statement on Monday.

The Minister of Economic Affairs should be given the task of concluding the negotiations quickly.

Health Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) had previously announced that the country would secure an option for one million of these vaccine doses.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) had also declared that his country had secured 2.5 million doses of Sputnik V with a preliminary contract in the event that the active ingredient was approved by the EU.

So far there is no approval in the EU or in Germany for Sputnik V. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining the application for approval of Sputnik V in the EU.

She is surprised "that there are reservations about Sputnik because this vaccine comes from Russia," said Schwesig.

The safety and effectiveness of the vaccine should now be tested as quickly as possible in an objective process.
