Potsdam (dpa / bb) - According to the State Ministry of Agriculture, the use of drones can detect and protect wild animals before the spring mowing.

Fawns and other young animals instead of fleeing from the mowers would duck and camouflage themselves and then be captured, the ministry said on Tuesday.

The animal protection officer Stefan Heidrich appealed to farmers to take measures to protect fawns, brown hares and ground-breeding birds.

Hazards to game during mowing should be avoided, he said.

One way to protect the animals is to mow inside out to provide escape opportunities.

The cutting height could also be limited to around 15 to 20 centimeters.

Scare-off measures and searching with hunting dogs were also part of it.

According to the information, the use of drones, which can use thermal imaging cameras to track fawns and other wild animals on grassland and arable forage, is very effective.

Since this technology is cost-intensive, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture is funding the acquisition with a total of three million euros.

Associations that are committed to the rescue of wild animals can submit applications for funding to the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) by September 1st.
