Berga (dpa / th) - In a ten-hour helicopter mission in Berga (Greiz district) 130 damaged trees were removed from the Elster slope.

The helicopter had to circle between the slope and the deposit in Berga more than 200 times on Monday and Tuesday, said Mayor Heinz-Peter Beyer (CDU) at noon after the work was completed.

The trees had to be felled because individual branches and trunks had already slipped onto the tracks of the Elstertalbahn.

Most of the dead trees would now be shredded and the rest would be sold as firewood.

MDR Thuringia had previously reported.

A total of 500 trees in Berga are affected by the forestry measures, said Beyer.

A large part (90 percent) of the removal costs of 250,000 euros are covered by state subsidies.

The rest of the deforestation can be managed without a helicopter.

Residents had been asked to leave their homes at three-hour intervals for the duration of the deployment.

“It was very disciplined and well done,” said Beyer.
