Berlin (dpa) - CDU boss Armin Laschet has appealed to the unity of the Union in the power struggle with CSU chairman Markus Söder for the candidacy for chancellor.

«A good, fair togetherness is key right now.

I wanted unity, ”said the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister, according to information from the German Press Agency of participants on Monday evening in a meeting of the influential state group of CDU MPs from North Rhine-Westphalia in Berlin.

Accordingly, Laschet received great support for a candidate for chancellor in the group.

Several participants had expressly welcomed the unanimous vote of the CDU top bodies for Laschet.

The support in the national group is likely to be important for Laschet, also in view of the nervousness among members of the Bundestag because of the poor poll numbers for the Union and for him personally.

The 42 NRW MPs form the strongest state group among the total of 245 Union MPs.

In the Union parliamentary group there is now a group of 65 members who demand a say in the decision on the candidate for chancellor.

Most of them are likely to favor Laschet's rival Söder.
