January 27, 2020 Leonardo Cazzaniga, former deputy primary of the Saronno Emergency Department (Varese), was sentenced to life in prison for 12 murders.

This was decided by the Court of Assizes of the Court of Busto Arsizio at the end of seven hours of the Council Chamber.

Leonardo Cazzaniga was found guilty of voluntary murder of 12 people, ten patients in the ward and mother and father-in-law of Laura Taroni, his former lover's nurse.

The Assize Court of Busto Arsizio (Varese) acquitted him of the murder charge of his mother-in-law, Maria Rita Clerici, and of two patients in the Saronno Emergency Department.

For a third death it was the same accusation that asked for his acquittal during the final indictment.

The other convictions

The Court of Assizes also sentenced to 2 years and 6 months for aiding and abetting four of the five doctors of the medical commission of the Saronno hospital, called to evaluate the work of Cazzaniga on the recommendation of two nurses.

The lawyer

"Leonardo Cazzaniga is tried as we are, life imprisonment with isolation is difficult to digest. The sentences must be respected but we will certainly not agree when we read the reasons and appeal".

This was stated by the lawyer Ennio Buffoli, defender of Cazzaniga, a few minutes after the sentence.

The relatives of the victims

"I am not relieved, the sentence cannot alleviate our pain, the way in which these events have overwhelmed us, especially my grandchildren."

Gabriella Guerra, sister of Massimo Guerra, one of the dead people, said this at the end of the reading of the sentence of life imprisonment against Cazzaniga.
