The chairman of the Junge Union (JU) Bayern, Christian Doleschal, has warned of an impending collapse of the Union into insignificance under a chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU).
"It's not just about the threat of losing the chancellorship," Doleschal told the AFP news agency with a view to the general election in September.
"In the end, it's about whether we as a Union lead ourselves into insignificance."
Therefore, the selection process between Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder must be cleverly designed, demanded Doleschal.
He assessed the support of the top CDU bodies for Laschet's candidacy for chancellor as unconvincing: This contradicts the broad support for Söder's candidacy for chancellor in the polls.
"In any case, it is clear that the opinion of the CDU functionaries is not in line with the formation of opinion in the population and in the CDU," emphasized the head of the JU Bavaria.
Doleschal, who sits in the European Parliament for the CSU, called on the CDU to resolve this dilemma now.

The CSU politician appealed to the supporters of Söder's candidacy within the CDU to come out of cover and to defend their position aggressively.
First of all, the parliamentary group should give their opinion in their session on Tuesday, then the CDU state associations should express their opinion.
"Now would be a suitable time for the CDU regional associations to say if they are for Söder," said Doleschal.
The Bavarian JU chairman said he did not see a reason for a quick decision on the Union's candidacy for chancellor called for by Laschet.
It was only known since Sunday that there were two applicants.
It doesn't have to take until Pentecost to make a decision.
But it is also not asking too much to allow yourself a week to find out the mood in the parties.
