Bentwisch (dpa / mv) - The agricultural and food industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is increasingly suffering from the corona pandemic.

"The economic expectations are clouding further," said the chairman of the marketing company of the agricultural and food industry MV, Tobias Blömer, the German press agency.

The reasons he cited were the price increases for raw materials and supplies and the weakening economy.

In an internal survey of the association, a good quarter spoke of a bad economic situation.

20 percent of the companies had no turnover in February.

In May 2020, only 9 percent reported zero sales.

Expectations would also be influenced by the falling consumer mood, for which the sometimes confusing political measures could be blamed, emphasized Blömer.

Another important factor is the lack of prospects for the hotel, catering and event industries - important partners for the food industry.

"There are urgently needed future concepts to be developed how the hotel, catering and event industries can develop," Blömer appealed to those in charge of politics.

"Should the partially helpless election campaign-driven ups and downs in politics continue, a significant short-term deterioration in the economic situation can also be expected in the food industry."

Blömer, head of Rostocker Wurst- und Schinkenspezialitäten GmbH, assumed that consumers could be stimulated to consume through clear perspectives.

The companies organized in the association generally welcomed the testing of employees for the coronavirus and see this as necessary.

Overall, there is too little compensation from the state for the irresponsible sales and earnings losses.

"The failure of the federal government in establishing an effective and rapid vaccination cannot be compensated for with mandatory measures by the economy," said Blömer.
