UK one step closer to reopening: shops reopen

In the United Kingdom, shops, hairdressers, gyms and beer gardens will reopen on Monday.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says it is a "huge step" towards freedom from the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the beginning of January, the United Kingdom went into lockdown for the third time due to the British variant of the corona virus.

Hundreds of thousands of companies had to close their doors.

Thanks to an effective vaccination campaign, measures in the country can now be relaxed step by step.

More than half of adults in the UK have received a first dose of the corona vaccine.

Mayors of four major cities again call for relaxation outside

The four major cities are once again making "an urgent appeal" to the cabinet to reopen the terraces and other outdoor spaces.

The mayors of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht announced this on Sunday.

"In densely populated areas, residents desperately need the outdoor spaces. They also appropriate these when the weather improves. This makes enforcement unfeasible and the local authority unwillingly confronts its own residents."

Last Friday, Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, already urged to reopen terraces and zoos, so that parks become less crowded.

The mayors of the other major cities rallied behind this.
