Groß Zicker (dpa / mv) - The fire in a multi-purpose building with holiday apartments on the island of Rügen, which caused damage of around 500,000 euros over the weekend, is probably due to a technical defect.

That was the result of the investigation of a fire expert, as a police spokeswoman said on Monday in Stralsund.

Further details - such as whether this was related to the electrical installation or kitchen appliances - were not made.

The fire broke out on Saturday night in Groß Zicker near Gager on the Mönchgut peninsula (Western Pomerania-Rügen).

A neighbor discovered the flames shortly after midnight and called for help.

80 firemen were on duty and laid up to 2 meters high foam carpets, but could not prevent the building and the holiday apartments from burning out.

The facades, roofs and windows of neighboring buildings were also damaged.

Two people were slightly injured.
