Dresden (dpa / sn) - The Saxon State Library wants to return several hundred books from Nazi looted property to the rightful heirs.

“Even more important than these case numbers are the fates behind them.

It is also our job, and as time goes on, it is becoming more and more important to tell the associated stories, ”explained Jana Kocourek, coordinator of provenance research at the State Library, on Monday in Dresden.

61 books have already been restituted.

The Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek - abbreviated to SLUB - has been conducting research for ten years on books that were stolen from their owners during the Nazi era or that otherwise came into the possession of others illegally.

Notes on this are provided by ex-libris, stamps or sometimes name entries and numbers.

In a few hundred cases, there were findings that point to persecution of the owners for racial, religious, ideological or political reasons.

With a view to the day of provenance research this Wednesday (April 14th), the SLUB has put together a new exhibition on research on Nazi-looted property.

It shows how it can be identified and how previous owners of the books can be located.
