Potsdam (dpa / bb) - After the CDU presidium had decided on the CDU chairman Armin Laschet as the Union's candidate for chancellor, Brandenburg's CDU state chairman Michael Stübgen also assured the 60-year-old of his support.

"He has gained important experience in the Bundestag, Europe and also as Prime Minister," said Stübgen on Monday in Potsdam.

"It is good that, as chairman of the CDU, he is ready to take on responsibility as a candidate for chancellor, and I support him in this."

Laschet announced on Monday after the presidium meeting that he would now also seek support from the larger party executive committee.

The CDU parliamentary group chairman Jan Redmann is also from Brandenburg as an elected member of the federal executive committee.

Stübgen is an advisory member of the committee.
