Erfurt (dpa / th) - Parts of the government district in Erfurt are to be supplied with solar power in the future.

The infrastructure ministry announced on Monday that the construction and assembly work for a photovoltaic system on buildings of three ministries was in progress.

"There is considerable potential in building structures to save energy and raw materials, to reduce environmentally harmful emissions and to protect natural and agricultural areas", said Infrastructure Minister Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff (left).

This is precisely what the public sector is called upon - the land alone is the owner of around 1400 buildings.

The completion of the solar system in the government district with a total installed capacity of 228 kilowatt-peak (kWp) is planned for mid-June.

According to a forecast, 99 percent of the electricity generated could be used directly in the ministries.

The state parliament had already commissioned the government in 2016 to install solar systems on government buildings.

Further solar projects are planned for the Ministry of the Environment and the Erfurt sports high school this year.
