Redmond (dpa) - Microsoft is strengthening its speech recognition skills with the purchase of the specialist Nuance.

With a valuation of 19.7 billion dollars (around 16.5 billion euros), it is the software giant's second-largest acquisition after the acquisition of the career network LinkedIn.

Nuance technology is used in areas such as healthcare.

Doctors can use it to record conversations with patients and insert them directly into electronic patient files.

The purchase price is $ 56 per Nuance share, 23 percent above Friday's closing price.

The previous Nuance boss will stay at the top and report to Microsoft's top manager Scott Guthrie, as the Windows group announced on Monday.

Information about the deal had already leaked in media reports on Sunday.
