Meißen (dpa / sn) - The city of Meißen - known for porcelain and the Albrechtsburg - wants to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in a second attempt.

Meissen submitted his application for the coveted title, the city announced on Monday.

The necessary documents were therefore handed over to the Ministry for Regional Development at the end of March.

The application with the title “The sites of Meissen porcelain” was a “real joint project”, it said.

In addition to the city, the State Porcelain Manufactory, the Meissen Porcelain Foundation and the State Palaces, Castles and Gardens have also submitted the application.

The small town on the Elbe had already applied for the title in 2012, but without success.

For the second attempt, Meißen is now focusing on its porcelain manufacture and its influence on European porcelain production.

"As the first and oldest of its kind in Europe, it set the technological and design standards for all subsequent porcelain manufacturers," says Manufactory Managing Director Tillmann Blaschke.

The Albrechtsburg, which towers high above the Elbe Valley, also plays a role.

The first porcelain factory in Europe was founded there in 1710.

The federal states are requested to submit up to two proposals for the German list of applicants by autumn 2021.

According to the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Saxony, three applications were submitted by the end of the deadline at the end of March; the State Office initially gave no information about the other two applicants.

The applications would be editorially revised by the end of April, it said.

In January 2024, the so-called tentative list will be available, which will determine which German applicants will start the Unesco selection process.
