Director of the Health Organization: There is still a long way to go to the end of the Covid-19 pandemic

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said today, Monday, that confusion and complacency in the face of Covid-19 means that there is still a long way to the end of the pandemic, but it can be controlled within months with effective public health measures.

"We also want to see societies and economies have reopened, and travel and trade have resumed," he said during a press conference in Geneva.

"But at the moment, intensive care units are overcrowded in many countries, and people are dying," he added.

"There is still a long way to go to the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. But we have a lot of reasons for optimism. The decrease in cases and deaths in the first and second months of the year shows that it is possible to curb this virus and its strains," he said.

What strengthens the infection, he said, is "confusion, complacency and inconsistency in public health measures."
