Consulted this weekend at the request of Emmanuel Macron, the mayors of France voted overwhelmingly in favor of maintaining the regional in June, despite the current health context.

The Head of State must now decide, with the position of the city councilors in mind.

The mayors of France have visibly decided: to the question of whether to maintain the regional elections in June, despite the Covid-19 crisis, the city councilors at this stage of the count answered a "massive yes" , learned Europe 1 from ministerial source, Monday afternoon.

This consultation was desired by Emmanuel Macron, before the weekend.

The head of state had asked the prefects on Friday evening to consult the mayors on a possible postponement of the vote, already postponed in June.

Discrepancy with the choice of LREM mayors

This result may be surprising: to be sure of his choice, the President of the Republic had asked several executives of the majority to survey local elected officials in La République en Marche.

Almost 80% of them pleaded for a postponement of the poll, a position which is therefore not that of the mayors as a whole.

Nothing says for the moment whether Emmanuel Macron will follow their advice.

But it would be politically very complicated not to do so in a context of health crisis where local elected officials are very upset against the executive.
