Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The Brandenburg CDU does not want to position itself in the duel between the CDU chairman Armin Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder for the candidacy for chancellor for the Union.

"Both could be chancellor," said CDU country manager Gordon Hoffmann on Monday the German press agency.

The CDU-Brandenburg did not specify one of the candidates.

"It is important that the question is now resolved quickly," emphasized Hoffmann.

The Berlin CDU spoke out on Monday for Söder as candidate for chancellor.

After Laschet was elected CDU chairman in mid-January, Brandenburg's CDU chairman Michael Stübgen had spoken out in favor of Laschet as candidate for chancellor - also in the event that Söder ran.

On Sunday, in addition to Laschet, Söder also declared his willingness to run as the Union's candidate for chancellor.

On Monday there were meetings of important top bodies of the federal CDU and the CSU.
