The Russian authorities are apparently threatening to force-feed the detained Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

This was announced by his team on Monday on Twitter.

The 44-year-old went on a hunger strike at the end of March to protest his detention conditions in a prison camp and, according to his team, has since lost eight kilograms.

Nawalny's supporters had recently reported a further deterioration in his health.

The opposition has pain in the back and numbness in the legs and arms.

Appropriate medical care is withheld from him.

Navalny survived an attack with a neurotoxin from the Novichok group in August last year.

After the attack, for which Navalny blames the Kremlin, the prominent critic was flown to Germany by President Vladimir Putin and treated at the Berlin Charité.

He was arrested immediately after returning to Russia in January.

The opposition politician was then sentenced to more than two and a half years in a prison camp for allegedly violating his probation conditions.

The decision was strongly condemned internationally and sparked mass protests in Russia.

Navalny was taken to detention center N2 in the small town of Pokrov, which is around 200 kilometers east of Moscow.

"Now they are killing him slowly and with torture"

The health of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has deteriorated further, according to his lawyers.

Navalny has been on hunger strike for more than a week.

He calls his detention conditions torture.
