Varese (dpa) - Oliver Zeidler started the Olympic year with great success.

The 24-year-old single driver from Ingolstadt won the final at the European Rowing Championships in Italy.

After a courageous race and a sovereign performance on Lake Varese, the 2019 world champion relegated defending champion Sverri Nielsen to second place.

At the finish his lead over the Dane was half a boat length.

"This race gives you self-confidence," commented Zeidler.

But he still sees room for improvement: “I'm satisfied with the final, but not with the entire weekend.

I need racing experience and I have to stay calm in my head. "

A few minutes earlier, the men's easy double scull won silver and the women's double scull won bronze.

The duo Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne from Krefeld and Mainz only had to admit defeat to the competition from Ireland.

After a hard-fought race, the gap to the winner was a boat's length.

Italy came third.

For the Germany eighth, the Olympic season started with a false start.

In the final, the crew around batsman Hannes Ocik (Schwerin) did not get beyond fourth place behind Great Britain, Romania and the Netherlands.

For the first time since the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, the parade boat of the German Rowing Association (DRV) missed a podium in international championships.
