Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - With a world class time of 3:43:44 hours, 50-kilometer walker Jonathan Hilbert from the LG Ohra Energie won the German championships in Frankfurt / Main and now has the best chances of an Olympic start in Tokyo.

The 25-year-old Thuringian prevailed on Saturday ahead of Nathaniel Seiler (Bühlertal / 3: 48: 44) and Carl Dohmann from Baden-Baden (3:48:54).

The trio met the norm (3:50:00) for the summer games in the Japanese capital.

"That was great.

Really very strong with this increase at the back.

That was a great competition.

We can be really proud of all the athletes and coaches, ”commented national coach Ronald Weigel.

Only five German walkers were ever faster than Hilbert over 50 kilometers.

The DLV record has been held by Andreas Erm from Potsdam for almost 18 years with 3:37:46 hours.

Previously, the Potsdam duo Nils Brembach and Saskia Feige had secured the title over 20 kilometers.

Both have good prospects of being nominated for the Olympic team of the German Athletics Association.

Brembach prevailed on the exhibition grounds in 1:21:37 hours and thus provided the required proof of performance after having already met the Olympic standard (1:21:00).

She was the only starter in the 20 km competition.
