Gießen (dpa / lhe) - Despite the consequences and restrictions of the corona pandemic, not significantly fewer young people will begin studying at the Hessian universities in the summer semester from next Monday than in the previous year.

However, the number of foreign students is likely to decline.

The Justus Liebig University in Giessen, for example, announced that the number of new students has been at a record level for years - “the corona pandemic has not changed anything”.

No final figures have yet been determined for the summer semester.

According to the university, however, it is assuming that the number of students this summer semester will be roughly at the previous year's level.

According to the information, fewer new students will be welcomed at the university in Fulda than in the summer semester 2021. According to current estimates, the number of freshmen is probably 390, compared to 442 last summer semester Fewer first-semesters take up a degree in courses of study with “usually high international participation”.

Thus, “the effects of the pandemic were noticeable for the first time”.

The Philipps University of Marburg also expects fewer students compared to the summer semester of the previous year.

The number of around 21,500 students - including around 1,700 freshmen and around 3,000 foreign students - means a “moderate decline”.

This is due in particular to the pandemic.

Among other things, the conditions for foreign students to travel to Marburg would be difficult.

"In addition, it can be assumed that many potential new students will postpone the start of their studies."

The Goethe University in Frankfurt expects a slight decline.

The final numbers have not yet been determined, said a spokesman.

"At the moment we are assuming around 2500 students who will start studying at Goethe University in the summer semester of 2021."

In the summer semester of the previous year, it was 3030.

In Darmstadt, the Technical University (TU) expects according to the information with "at least 600 first and new enrollments".

Final figures are therefore not yet available for the summer semester 2021.

Last year, it was said to have been around 640 on the cut-off date in mid-May.

In the coming summer semester, the Hessian universities and colleges will again be dependent on digital teaching.

As the Philipps University in Marburg announced, “despite the diverse teaching formats and the extensive work opportunities in the libraries, PC pools and laboratory internships, personal exchange and important aspects of student life are usually no longer due to the pandemic”.

At the University of Kassel, too, people want "more direct academic encounters and more life on campus," as a spokesman said.

Measures that would make this possible again in the future would be supported.

It is not yet clear in Kassel whether the pandemic will affect the number of new students in the summer semester.
