Siena (AP) - Marathon runner Richard Ringer from LC Rehlingen is well on the way to the Olympic Games.

In Siena, Italy, the 32-year-old athlete undercut the Olympic standard on Sunday with a time of 2:08:49 hours and finished in 17th place.

He climbed to second place in the nomination list for the summer Olympic marathon in Sapporo behind Amanal Petros (2:07:18) and ahead of Hendrik Pfeiffer (both TV Wattenscheid / 2:10:18).

Simon Boch from Regensburg (2:10:48) fell back in fourth place.

The former German record holder Arne Gabius from the Therapy Reha Bottwartal association did not finish.

"It was really a particularly good competition for me," wrote Ringer on Instagram after the second marathon of his career.

He undercut his best time by more than two minutes and ran the fourth-best marathon time ever for a German in cold, wet weather.

Gabius was almost four minutes behind Ringer at kilometer 12.4 with an intermediate time of 42:00 minutes - shortly afterwards the 40-year-old from Stuttgart got out.

It should have been his last chance to qualify for the Olympic marathon.
