May 22, 2018 Australian Archbishop Philip Wilson was found guilty of covering up child sexual abuse in the 1970s.

Wilson, the highest Catholic prelate in the world convicted of this crime, was found guilty by the court of Newcastle, north of Sydney.

In particular, the 67-year-old Wilson was accused of covering up the pedophile activities of priest Jim Fletcher, in the Hunter region of New South Wales, avoiding reporting the charges against him.

The archbishop has always rejected the accusations and his defense has tried several times to block the process, arguing that the high prelate suffers from Alzheimer's.

Judge Robert Stone, however, found him guilty and the archbishop now faces up to two years in prison.

"I am obviously saddened by today's decision, now I will have to consider the reasons and consult closely with my defense to decide the next steps," Wilson said.

The Australian verdict comes a few days after the decision of the Chilean bishops to resign en bloc as part of the pedophilia scandal that has overwhelmed several members of the Catholic hierarchy in the South American country.
