Dresden (dpa / sa) - AfD chairman Jörg Meuthen has given the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on June 6th a key position for his party.

"It is of exceptional importance, and we should all do everything we can to ensure that it is a complete success for us," he said on Saturday at the AfD federal party conference in Dresden.

As the last state election before the federal election, this election has the character of a signal.

But there is an even more important reason, emphasized the party leader: "If we do it right this time, we have a great chance in this election, for the first time and even with some distance to become the strongest political force in a federal state."

For the first time in the history of the party, this would be accompanied by the mandate to form a government.

Therefore, maximum commitment of the party for the state election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt is particularly worthwhile.

The Saxony-Anhalt top candidate for AfD and parliamentary group leader Oliver Kirchner recently said that he would be satisfied with an election result of 23 to 25 percent.

That would roughly correspond to the result of the 2016 election. Regarding possible power options, he said that the AfD had also achieved success in the opposition.

Tolerating a CDU government is conceivable under certain circumstances.

The CDU is more collegial with the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt than in most of the other state parliaments.
