After almost four weeks in dry dock in Bremerhaven, the Hamburg museum ship “Cap San Diego” has moored again at its regular place at the Überseebrücke.

The almost 160-meter-long general cargo freighter returned to the Hanseatic city on Saturday morning, completely overhauled and with a fresh ship inspection.

Two tugs pulled and steered the freighter and turned it up the Elbe just behind the Elbphilharmonie.

Overhaul for 1.4 million euros in Bremerhaven

The almost 60-year-old landmark had been subjected to the so-called class, a kind of ship inspection, which is due every five years since mid-March in the dry dock of the Bredo Dry Docks shipyard in Bremerhaven.

Half of the costs of around 1.4 million euros were borne by the federal government and the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation as the ship owner.

More than 200 points were processed in the dry dock.

The focus was on the tanks and the chain case, which were cleaned, measured and preserved.

There was also work on the engine, in the stern tube and on deck.

In addition, the entire outer skin of the ship was repainted with 2200 liters of paint.

Since 2003 the "Cap San Diego" is a museum and hotel

The "Cap San Diego" was put into service in 1962 and went to South America for the Hamburg Süd shipping company.

It has served as a museum and hotel since 2003, but is still seaworthy and travels several times a year from the Überseebrücke with up to 500 passengers to the North or Baltic Sea.

Due to the corona pandemic, the ship cannot currently be viewed.
