Loop (dpa / sn) - The Green League protested on Sunday in the vicinity of Loop (Görlitz district) against the excavation of the Nochten open-cast mine in the course of lignite mining in the region.

According to the organization that has leased a plot of land there, the energy company Leag has threatened in writing that it will be expropriated.

"We won't give it up voluntarily," said René Schuster from the Green League.

In the opinion of the environmental group, the previously valid lignite plan must be revised.

In their opinion, the excavation of further areas could be prevented.

According to its own statements, the Green League received a half-hectare piece of forest for use from owners who do not want to sell their forest to the Leag in December 2019.

It is close to the localities of Rohne and Runde.

The use for nature conservation, educational and cultural events was stipulated in the lease agreement, which, according to the Green League, runs until 2037.

According to the Leag's previous plans, the leased forest should be reached by the coal excavators around 2024.
