Essen (dpa / lnw) - Rail travelers and commuters between Essen and Gelsenkirchen will be blocked for five weeks due to a major construction site.

From this Saturday evening (9 p.m.) to May 14, the regional trains of the RE 2 line do not stop in Essen Hauptbahnhof and Mülheim, and the RE 42 trains between Gelsenkirchen and Essen Hauptbahnhof are also canceled, as Deutsche Bahn announced.

The long-distance trains running on the route between Hamburg and Cologne are diverted without stopping in Essen and take around five minutes longer.

The railway has set up replacement stops or buses for regional trains and is referring to the underground traffic.

For long-distance travelers who want to travel to or from Essen, there are numerous transfer connections in Duisburg or Dortmund, according to Deutsche Bahn.

It is necessary to completely block the line for the construction of a new overhead line system at Essen-Kray station.

The infrastructure there is to be modernized in the coming years.

During the closure, for example, 83 foundations for the new overhead line are to be laid and the masts set.

In addition, point heaters are installed and minor welding work is carried out.

This year alone, the modernization will cost around two million euros.

Deutsche Bahn is investing a total of nine million euros in the site until completion.
