April 11, 2021 About eight out of ten Italians (19%) for a total of 48.2 million people are outside the red zones and the restrictive constraints that characterize them.

This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti on the new color map with Italy with only 4 regions (Valle d'Aosta, Puglia, Campania and Sardinia) in the red zone to which, however, some provinces and metropolitan areas at risk are added.

An important change for a large part of the national population which - underlines Coldiretti - regains space of freedom but also for many economic operators who can reopen after the painful closure of the Easter holidays.

Without yellow zones closed for table or counter service 360 thousand bars, restaurants and pizzerias

With Italy without yellow zones, however, the 360 thousand bars, restaurants, pizzerias and agritourisms along the entire peninsula remain closed for table or counter service with a 7 billion dollar crack in April that threatens to bring many restaurant services and related supply chains to the definitive closure.

With the closures in April - continues Coldiretti - the unsold food and wines since the beginning of the pandemic rise to 1.1 million tons due to the collapse of the activities of bars, taverns, restaurants, pizzerias and agritourisms that overwhelms entire sectors of the Made in Italy agri-food.

To the economic and occupational damage is added the risk of extinction for over 5 thousand local food and wine specialties, from cheeses to cured meats to desserts, due to the lack of market outlets due to the absence of tourists and the closure of restaurants and farmhouses where the traditions from the fields to the table have been handed down for centuries.

Tons of meat, fish and 220 million bottles never reached the tables in 12 months

In danger with the pandemic there is also the national primacy of biodiversity conquered by Italy in Europe.

It is estimated that 330 thousand tons of beef, 270 thousand tons of fish and seafood and about 220 million bottles of wine - underlines Coldiretti - have never arrived in the last year on the tables of the premises forced to an exhausting stop and go without the possibility of planning purchases even for highly perishable products.

Numbers behind which - states Coldiretti - there are tens of thousands of farmers, breeders, fishermen, winegrowers and cheesemakers who suffer together with restaurateurs.

The drastic reduction in activity - argues Coldiretti - weighs on the sale of many agri-food products, from wine to beer, from meat to fish, from fruit to vegetables which find an important outlet market in out-of-home consumption.

In some sectors such as fish and wine, catering - specifies Coldiretti - is even the main marketing channel for turnover but to be the most affected were the high-end products from wine to cured meats to cheeses.

The increase in food spending by Italian families by 7.4% in 2020 for the longer time spent at home has unfortunately not compensated for the crack that occurred in the restaurant business with the halving of the volume of business (- 48%) with the result that the food consumption of Italians that in 2020 has dropped to a minimum for at least a decade with an unprecedented 30 billion dollar crack, according to Coldiretti analysis on Ismea data.

"Also in the light of the vaccination campaign, if the health conditions allow it, it becomes important to allow the opening of the restaurant premises starting from the outdoor ones" states Coldiretti in underlining that important security measures, such as the easily verifiable seat spacing, the strictly limited and controllable number of accesses, the registration of the names of each individual admitted customer.
